The Handmaid’s Tale

Season Five – Border

This episode is more about learning new information and not a lot of action. It fills in a lot of blanks for questions not answered in the previous episodes.

The first thing is why is Hannah wearing purple. June and Moira know Hannah is too old for pink. June and Moira had a feeling of what it means; and that Hannah can be married off now, but they want to know for sure. Moira admits she knows of a group that can get messages into Gilead. Moira did not want to tell June for good reasons; because we all know June has mentally gone over the edge.

Moira takes June to an underground group called Mayday. June thought it was a made up term but learns that it is actually a movement. June goes to the underground so that she can get in touch with Nick and that’s her only way. She learns from Nick that the color purple states that Hannah is in school to become a Wife. June is not happy about that and is now desperate to get Hannah out of Gilead.

The second thing we learn when Serena goes to dinner at Commander Lawrence’s house is how Nick met his wife. We also find out that her name is Rose. Rose is the daughter of friends of the McKinsey’s who are Hannah’s now parents. Mr. McKinsey is talking about completely getting rid of June. The McKinsey’s are so afraid that June will be a problem for them and they are right. Nick and Lawrence are not looking happy about that.

Serena has decided to stay in Gilead because she thinks she will be valuable for the Commanders. Serena later founds out that they do not want her in Gilead. The Commanders inform Serena that she needs to go back to Canada. Serena is very disappointed and had the bomb dropped on her which she deserves. Serena travels back to Canada in silences; and probably thinking how afraid she is to return because of June. Well, Serena should be. June learns Serena is on her way back and is waiting for her.

I hope you enjoy this episode. Again, it answered so many questions I had about some things. What will June do next? I hope she does not go back into Gilead but I know she will. I’m seeing sneak peaks that Moira and Luke will be going back into Gilead with her. Who will take care of Nicole if that happens, Rita? So many questions!!

The Handmaid’s Tale

Season Five – Ballet

If you could have seen June’s face, oh boy. If June could have reached out and touched Serena, that would have been the end of the season.

At the end of episode one, Serena gets her grand send off for Fred. You can see June in white getting ready for the ballet; and Serena in black getting ready for Fred’s funeral. Now I’m assuming that June is being portrayed as the angel and Serena as the devil. In my opinion, they are both evil but I will leave that up to you.

The funeral is filmed live on the networks; and you can see Serena proudly walking in the parade. I’m assuming it is the Main Street in Gilead. Serena has the entire town participating and no one looks happy to be there. I mean, it’s a funeral and no one should look happy, but it’s Fred who they look at as a traitor.

Serena is walking like she is on the runway and everyone is looking at her. She had the nerve to stop in front of the Handmaids; and they had to bow down to her. Really.

In the meantime, June is watching the ballerina perform and is getting teary eyed. Was she thinking about the time when Serena gave her that music box as a gift; and all June saw was a girl trapped in a box like she was. June is with Luke on a date. After the ballet, they are having coffee and seem to be having a great time reconnecting.

June and Nick turn to leave and what do they see? The funeral of Fred live on tv and the camera is on Serena. Serena gets the the end of the parade and turns to be greeted by a group of young kids not dressed in pink/blue. One girl gets out of line and comes to bring white flowers over to Serena. The tv camera is focused on her – it’s Hannah!! Serena has a smirk on her face as she holds Hannah’s hand looking at the camera.

June and Luke are shocked at first but then realize it is Hannah. They are blown away! Serena purposely found Hannah and used her to get back at June. If looks could kill. Serena did not think that through. You never poke at a Momma Bear! Hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.

The Handmaid’s Tale

Season Five – Morning

Life in Canada for June after getting rid of Fred. She is home with Nick and Nicole but leaves to meet up with the resistance. All she can think of are the events that lead up to Fred’s death. The resistance is ready to do more harm and angry at June for not moving faster. June struggles as she considers what her next move will be now.

Serena learns that Fred is dead and is taken to a secure location. I mean, isn’t she a prisoner. They sure have nice accomodations in Toronto. She ask Mark if she can bury Fred in Gilead. Arrangements are made between the two counties to send him back “home.”

Gilead is not happy to have the body of Fred Waterford back in their country. The church that was picked out is not what Serena was expecting. A reception is held at one of the Commander’s house and Mark gets to observe some of Gilead.

We found out the Emily has left Canada and has gone back to Gilead to found Aunt Lydia. June goes to visit Emily’s family and is not welcomed there after trying to found out contact information for Emily. I understand why Emily is upset but why go back to the place you were tortured for years. Don’t get it.

June tries to turn herself in and arrested. Once she is at the police station, she is let go because the actions were done outside of Canadian territory. It’s called the NoMansLand. So she is let go with a fine. Luke wants to put it all behind him but June has turned dark and unable to get out of it.

Also, we meet Nick’s wife for the first time. She seems to know everything about June; and seems content with June’s decision to get rid of Fred. I’m thinking his wife also works with the resistance. We shall see.

Lots to unload in the one episode but it was worth the wait. If you are not caught up; now is the time.

Tyrant

Season One-Three

This is an older TV show and only has three seasons on Hulu. It’s about an American family who is visiting the Middle East but because of Barry, they end up staying longer than expected.

Far from reality but it may keep your attention. Barry has run from the Middle East and his family at age 16 and goes to live in America. The show starts out with him married and has two children. Barry is from the Middle East and is the son of a dictator. He takes his family there after 20 years for his nephew’s wedding.

Barry’s family does not know anything about his first family and are blown away at how rich he is. Barry wants no part of the life there; but is forced to stay after his father dies. Barry’s brother, Jamal becomes the President of the county and is far from a nice man. Barry stays in the country to calm Jamal’s temperament and make him more likeable for the public. The attempt turns out to be a waste of time for Barry who gets himself in trouble.

Follow the lives of the California family trying to fit in to the Middle Eastern life as best they can. They keep forgetting they are not in America anymore. Also, you follow the lives inside the palace and of the locals trying to stay alive. It will sure keep you guessing. Another quick watch but it will take you longer than a weekend to watch.

E C H O E S

Season One

Another show to watch if you have nothing else to watch.

This show is about two disturbed twins who have nothing else to do but switch their lives every year. They are identical and seemed for years to get away with this switch without anyone knowing. Every year on their birthdays, the twins switch and start living the life of the other twin. Really. Talk about being selfish.

The two husbands seem to not have any idea what is going on. Maybe because the men are going on with the normal day to day things that happen in life. Or do they? One twin lives in Virginia and the other in Los Angeles. The twins have nothing in common but this birthday ritual.

This show is only seven episodes and there could have just been a movie made about it. The twins do have some things happen to them growing up, but who hasn’t. These twins are just crazy in my opinion and eventually blame each other for their problems. I mean – life happens.

So, if you want to venture into the lives of two twins who have mental problems, watch this show. You can watch it in one weekend. Enjoy!!

Devil in Ohio

Season One

This is a quick watch if you have some time on your hands. This girl is a mess. You feel sorry for her at first and look out!! Show is on Netflix.

Mae is a teenager who runs away from home in a nightgown. She really didn’t think that one through. She ends up in the hospital and Dr. Suzanne is put on her case. Dr. Suzanne gets attached to this child; and moves her in her house. Dr. Suzanne has a husband and three children of her own. Bad mistake. You start to see Dr. Suzanne has issues too.

Mae plays this victim role really well and everyone in the house starts to like her. Dr. Suzanne tried at first to get her in a foster home but it didn’t work out. Mae starts attaching herself to Jules, one of Dr. Suzanne’s daughters.

Detective Lopez starts to investigate where Mae comes from; and it’s a little town in Ohio with just one group of people. Mae comes from cult group where she talks about being abused by her parents. Doesn’t this girl realize she was living in a not so normal circumstances. Not a all. Mae gets the taste of how people really live and does not want to go back home.

Meanwhile, Mae’s family is looking for her trying to summons her home before the next full moon. This is a show worth watching. Not the greatest plot but a good escape.
