Season Five of this show began on October 27th. What a way to bring back the season, good job!! They waste no time digging into the COVID 19 pandemic and racial tensions in the country today.
Randall is the key to start to the season. They are living in the start of the pandemic with Beth checking Randall at the door with hand sanitizer, and Randall having to take his clothes off before entering the townhome. Randall states later that she has turned in Dr. Fauci; great compliment. They watch the release of the video of George Floyd and are like most devastated by the outcome. On top of that, it’s the Big Three 40th birthday coming up; and Randall has declined to go. Randall and Kevin are still not speaking because of the exchange they had at the end of season four. Kate does her best to reach out to Randall and feels rejected.
Rebecca gets lost and it brings all the Pearson children together. Kate lets Randall know that their mother is missing and he goes off to the cabin. When he gets there, Rebecca has been found and resting. Randall is very cold towards Kate and especially Kevin. Randall goes to see his mother to make sure she is fine; discovers that a medicine she is taking made her have a relapses. After figuring out Rebecca’s problem, Randall turns to leave. He is ready to get back to his family. I don’t think at this moment he considers the Pearsons as his family; just my opinion. Kate is devastated that Randall is leaving and tries to talk to him. She is upset about everything going on in the world with the racism and does not know what to do. Randall turns to to her and ask her what her concerns are. He states that she was never concerned before and that the family never talked about racism. Randall reveals that he carried that burden alone. Kate is so upset and uncomfortable and doesn’t know what to say. Randall says that he is “exhausted and is done trying to make this family feel comfortable.” Those are powerful words. It needed to be said. I may even use that line in the future.
Kevin is the most clueless of all. He is so wrapped up in himself and the pregnant Madison that he does not even know what’s going on in the world. He tries to talk to Randall but it was all about him and the new babies coming. Randall does not spend a lot of time talking to him. They will need to work out their problems this season.
This was part one of a two parts. Everyone needs to watch this episode because it hits home for a lot of people. I commend NBC for taking on the issues of COVID 19 and race. And they are even wearing mask!!
